I wrote this before Christmas, but I never posted it.
This nation was not founded on the principle of not offending anyone. In
fact many of its first colonists had been deeply offensive to some group in
Europe, usually the religious establishment, which often meant the government. Now we are expected to worry about offending someone with our holiday calibrations, as if they were
obscene. I find sweat pants on fat people obscene, but nobody seems to care.
Yet saying Merry Christmas is supposed to be risky. The odd part is that the
only people who complain are not personally offended. They just don't want
some other person to be offended. I will say Merry Christmas to anyone and
everyone, and if they don't celebrate Christmas, I will just have to say,
"Have a quiet lonely Christmas." Christmas is coming. It is on the calendar,
like it or not. Stores will be closed. Be merry or don't.
