The term "Art" seems to be hard to define. Artists especialy dislike definitions of the term. If you read what artists have to say about art, theirs and others' art, yousee that they understand the concept in a pretty universal way. At one site, an artist says, "Art is the only means by which one soul may touch another."
I have a definition that I think works well: Art is anything intended to communicate emotion. That covers every kind of art, including performing arts, music, visual arts, dance, and even performance art. The intent part means that art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
There are some in the art world, mostly amateurs, who seems to think that anything can be art if it is strange enough. If it does not make the viewer feel something, it will not be good. I wonder if the reason visual artists do not like my definition is that art is a non-verbal experience. The verbal part of their brain is not talking to the artistic visual part. That is an idea that fits with the book, "Drawing with the Right Side of the Brain". Take a look at the web site.
