There are warning messages on everything today. There is even a warning on soda bottles about pointing the top at people. There is a warning on the towel dispensers that have the loop of fabric towel underneath saying not to put your head in the loop. Here is a nice collection.
The problem with these warnings is that they are written by lawyers. Lawyers are not known for clarity or brevity. For example, on space heaters, the warning says:
WARNING: Source of possible combustion. Keep away from flammable materials.
It says this heater can be a source of something that may be a fire. What are flammable materials? Explain that to a four year old child.
These things are dangerous. I think the label should be simplified so as to readable by anyone, and only as hard to read as needed to get the message across:
DANGER: HOT! This can start a fire! Keep it away from things that can burn!
A picture would be nice too. Something like a bed on fire might be appropriate.
Notice the words this and it. There is no need to omit words and sound like Charlie Chan. My version is shorter and easier to understand.
