Cat whiskers

I don't want to experiment on my own cats, but I have a theory that cat whiskers are partially for the reception of low frequency sound. I am planning to build a low frequency oscillator circuit connected to a speaker to see how low they can detect. They should be very interested in sounds under a piece of carpet. They rest of the experiment would be to cut the whiskers on one side or both and test the cat's ability to locate the speaker.
